Last year, we initiated our first ‘flock’ of broad beans. Over 25 growers participated in this unique ‘crowd growing’ experiment and we hop to continue this long-term project into the 2025-2026 broad bean planting season.
The aim is to grow a mixture of broad bean varieties which will open pollinate and become more genetically diverse each year and work well in our local soils and the challenges we are facing with climate change. In about five years’ time, we hope to have developed a new broad bean - a true Exeter Broad Bean!
We welcome new growers for the project as well as last year’s participants.
Come to our Broad Bean project meet up where we will discuss what happened during last year’s growing season and prepare for the new season planting. Our mentor, market gardener Dan Fox will also be on hand to answer questions.
We will also be giving away a seed treatment for participants which we hope will make our plants stronger.
Please RSVP if you are able to attend the workshop by email or if you would like more information.
